What is Adult Children of  Alcoholics® and Dysfunctional Families (ACA)?

ACA is a unique Twelve Step program that creates a safe setting in which adults who grew up in dysfunctional homes can feel safe and find a way to share their stories with others.                                   Big Red Book  (BRB) p. xvi

The ACA Program was founded on the belief that family dysfunction is a disease that infected us as children and affects us as adults. BRB p. xiii You may be an adult child if you experience some of these common behaviors:

  • Fear of abandonment
  • Fear of authority figures
  • Judging ourselves harshly
  • Confusing love for pity
  • Marrying an alcoholic or becoming one or both. BRB p. xii

While ACA is similar to other Twelve Step programs, our emphasis is on the family system and the Inner Child or True Self which sets ACA apart from all other fellowships. BRB p. xiv
